Farmoor Report w/e 25th Oct 09

Water levels are fairly full. The water is reasonably clear and 13 Celcius.

Farmoor 1
Still very quiet with few anglers fishing. Fish to 8lbs being taken on minkies or nymphs fished slowly and quite deep down.

Farmoor 2
Fishing is brilliant at the moment. Rod averages are not dipping below 3 on any day. Both boats and bank are seeing many anglers catch their limits with fish to 6lb. Two anglers on sporting tickets returned an estimated 50 rainbows to 4lb taken 10’ down on diawl bachs drifting down the South bank. The RAF held a bank match and 13 anglers caught 85 fish – a rod average of 6.5! Most fish were taken on intermediate lines and boobies. Other methods working include intermediate/slow sink lines and minkies or floating lines with teams of PTN and GRHE.

Tight lines!

Farmoor Report w/e 1st Nov 2009

Both reservoirs are almost full, water temp is 13 Celcius. There is a small area of algae on the windward bank of F2 but otherwise water clarity is good.

Farmoor I
A few anglers have fished it this week with some good rewards. One banked 11 fish to 8lbs on various flies (small lures and nymphs).

Farmoor II
Still fishing exceptionally well. Best fish of the week was a cracking 10.5lb rainbow to Mike Roberts of Didcot. He took the fish on a small hopper only 10 feet from the bank – well done sir! Boats are fishing well with plenty of fish being taken drifting with diawl bachs about 10 feet down or anchoring and fishing boobies. Bank anglers are catching fish on just about any fly they tie onto their leader at the moment. Rod average for the week is 3.5.

Farmoor Report w/e 8 November

Both reservoirs are fairly full with levels slowly rising. Water is reasonably clear and is now cooling down quite quickly (approx 1 degree per week) with current temp being 12C.

Farmoor I
Still very slow with only a few hardy soles trying it. The fishing is difficult with the fish seeming to be fairly deep down and quite a way out. We have now recommenced stocking with rainbows of 3lbs and upwards so sport should start to improve.

Farmoor II
Still fishing it’s socks off at the moment. Rod average has consistently been around 3. Fish to 5lbs have been taken on both bank and boat, again a variety of methods and flies are working from surface activity down to the bottom.

Don’t forget it’s the Christmas match on Saturday 19th December, more details from the Rangers on 07747 640707

Farmoor report w/e 15/11/09

The reservoirs are now open for fishing following the temporary closure last week. No trout have been lost and it is business as usual.

The water levels are dropping following last weeks ‘incident’ in the river. Water is clear and cooling quite rapidly now with a 2 degree fall last week to 10 Celcius.

Farmoor 1
News of our restocking has yet to spread so it’s still very quiet. One angler managed 5 fish to 4lbs on small white lures.

Farmoor 2
Still fishing exceptionally well for the time of year. Dave Kidby had the week’s best rainbows at 6lb and 4.5lb from the cages. Arthur Cole returned a brown estimated at 6-7lb fro the bank. Good fish still to be caught on most methods.

Christmas match is 19th December – call the Rangers on 07747 640707 to book a place.

Evening Gents (and Ladies)
My brother and myself fished FarmoorII on Tuesday 17 Nov from 09.30 thru till 11.30. I am on late shift this week and fancied a cheeky couple of hours before heading off, and thought a couple of fish would be good for the freezer!
We fished on the West Bank opposite the middle carpark and set up with two Coral Fritz Booby Blobs on a 12 ft Leader and a DI5. The dropper was 6ft from the point btw.
First cast, Our Kid had a 3lb "Bow" in fantastic nick with a tail like a shovel!
My 2nd cast I took similar and the pattern was set for the next two hours.
We were casting out across the wind, allowing the line around 20/25 secs to sink then a pull and a slow figure of 8, repeated all the way back, most takes coming around 15 ft out on the weed edges.
We took 10 fish between us (5 apiece) in two hours, and lost a couple apiece too
All were in fantastic condition, all fought really well, and the total bag weight was 10 fish for 25lb13oz!! the biggest fish being 3lb06oz you can see the average of around 2lb05oz is impressive!!
It was a bright, breezy day, wind from the S/SW @ about 12/15 kts temperature was about 13 or 14 degrees and the sun was bright and very little cloud in evidence.
I have been a huge fan of Farmoor for the 4 years I have been Chucking Fluff and I fish it reasonably regular, but this short session was way beyond anything I expected or have experienced at this time of year.
So, in short, if you are thinking of it.........DO IT!!
I shall be back in a week and a half's time when on lates again!

Farmoor Report w/e 22/11/09

Water levels have dropped a little, fairly clear and 10 Celcius. Fishery is open and business as usual.

Farmoor 1
A few anglers are starting to fish now with some reasonable results. Rod average is hovering around the 2.5 mark with fish mainly being taken on small white or black lures fished on a slow sinker.

Farmoor 2
Still fishing excellently, especially considering that it’s late November! Fish seem to be shoaled quite tightly so the more mobile anglers are catching more fish. Boats are catching loads of fish, mainly deeper down on boobies, although floating lines and nymphs are still taking limit bags also. Bank is fishing well with fish being taken on a variety of methods such as nymphs, lures and boobies. There is an excellent article by Charles Jardine in December’s Flyfishing & Flytying magazine, focusing on indicator fishing as perfected by Farmoor stalwart Paul ‘Trusker’ Troth, very informative for those that enjoy this style of fishing.

We have around 40 names for the Christmas match (19th Dec), still plenty of room if you would like to enter, call the Rangers on 07747 640707.

Farmoor Report w/e 29th November

The water levels are fairly low and with current river conditions they are expected to drop further. The bank is quite slippery so please be careful when fishing. Non-slip mats are available for use. Water temperature remains at 10 Celcius but with the cold weather forecast it will probably drop.

Farmoor I
A few anglers are now fishing and catching fish to 6lb, mainly on small lures. Rod average is 3. We are about to stock more fish averaging 3.5 lb so fishing should improve.

Farmoor II
Fishing is still excellent with fish to 5lbs taken this week, again on many different flies and lines. The boats are again fishing very well with many limit bags being taken on boobies, the fish are shoaled up still so it does pay to move about until you find them. Bank anglers are catching on floating lines and pheasant tails still, although with the colder weather boobies are startng to come into their own.

Farmoor Report w/e 5th Dec

Water levels are low and fairly coloured. It is always a fine line between pumping in coloured water or letting the res levels drop at this time of year, hopefully with the colder spell forecast the water levels will recover soon as the Thames will run clear. Temp remains 10 Celcius.

Farmoor I is beginning to fish well. Rod average is 4 with fish to 6lbs being taken on small lures.

Farmoor II is still fishing very well with a rod average of 3. Most fish are now being taken on sinking lines and boobies. A Marshman landed a cracking 8lb 3oz rainbow from a boat by the cages, his partner that day had three over 4lbs, all on a sinking line and red goldhead.

Farmoor Report w/e 13th Dec

Water levels are now below the rippled concrete – please take care when fishing as the banks are pretty slippery. Levels should start to rise as the river fines down. Water temp is still 10 Celius.

Farmoor I has started to fish well. Anglers are catching on a variety of flies such as PTN, lures and blobs. Rod average is 4.

Farmoor II is still fishing well with a rod average of 2.7. Lots of fish being taken on boobies from both boat and bank with yet another fish of 8lbs being taken by the lim tower. The colder weather will see the fish moving further out and closer to the bottom so boobies in various colours will be the number one fly from now on.

Farmoor Report w/e 20th Dec

Water levels are now slowly rising with continuous pumping in throughout the week. This has, however, drastically lowered the water temperature to a very cold 4 Celcius. There is also a tinge of colour in the water so brighter coloured boobies (ie yellow, orange etc) are the order of the day.

Please be aware that the site is closed for all angling on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

The Christmas match was held on 19/12 on Farmoor II. Despite the freezing weather turnout was good with 41 hardy souls braving the frost. Fishing was good considering conditions with 99 fish being caught giving a rod average of 2.4 A good few anglers were caught out by the conditions and didn’t bring shooting heads with them.

Welsh angler Matthew Griffiths was top rod on the day with 10 fish for 19lb 9oz. Second was Total Flyfisher editor Steve Cullen with 9 fish for 19lb 0oz. Third was Jim Longmore with 7 good sized fish for 16lb 12.5oz. Well done guys! Jim also managed the largest fish of the day at 3lb 0oz – clearly the cold weather had put off the larger fish that were expected. There were also plenty of brown trout caught and returned, Brian Parrott banking one of at least 4lb on his first cast!

Have a great Christmas and we hope to see you on the bank over the festive period – fishing is usually good with plenty of fish coming out to booby tactics.
