Just like Chew in the good days 20 years ago! Went to F2 today & what breeze there was died a death within 10 minutes of starting. As there were a lot of fish rising someway out I decided to change to a boat and luckily got the last one! I went out at about 12.00 and was back in by 3pm with 8 fish for 17.5lbs all on dries. It was brilliant fishing and not difficult. All that was needed was to cast quietly around and watch until one came within range. Work out which way he was going, give him about 6' of lead and he usually obliged. These were the perfect conditions for reservoir dry fly fishing - flat calm, buzzers coming off and fish rising. Like I said, I haven't had dry fly fishing like that on a stillwater since the heyday on Chew, Grafham & Rutland back in the late 80's & early 90's. I hope this lasts until next weekend.

Friday 19 September

Farmoor II
Water: Levels low and some heavy green Algae around the edge in places though still many clear spots
Boats: fishing very well, please try to book boats in advance - we had waiting list of 6 last weekend!
Bank: not as good as boats, but still good, fish in top 3rd of water.
Note: 700 steelheads stocked into F2 yesterday (it will be difficult to tell the difference between the rainbow and steelheads in their present condition, they will only show their change in colour as they get older - all from Trafalgar Fisheries)

Farmoor I - catch & release
Water: levels low and also some green algae growth around the edge. Many clear areas though.
Bank: still fishing very well with 2 more double figure rainbows being caught this week.

IMPORTANT:
The fishing car parks have all been resurfaced, please ensure that you use them. Cars parked on the grass or in the disabled parking bays (except those with disabled badges) will be asked to move immediately. Car Park 4, the last one at the top of the causeway, is now for Farmoor 1 fishermen only. We appreciate your co-operation in this, thank you.

Great weather this weekend, nice to see the sun, but not so good for fishing.

Fished Saturday late afternoon and evening on F1, glad to see the algae growth is almost gone. Very quiet the first hour or so, couldn't get a touch, but had some great sport on the dry fly in the evening and took my best fish to date at Farmoor, a 6.5lb hard fighting rainbow - great condition and fin perfect.

Today was just as difficult, bright sunshine and chasing the slight breeze around F1 all afternoon. Eventually caught on black buzzers late afternoon.

Anyone else have any luck? Boats seemed to be doing well and I know Saturday's bank anglers on F2 were catching.

A friend and i had a boat out on Farmoor 2 Saturday in the hope of catching a few fish off the top. Flat calm and overcast when we arived with fish showing got our hopes up but by the time we got out to the middle the sun came out and the wind got up. An hour fishing with dry flies resulted in one fish so we changed tackle and searched the depths for the fish.
Finaly found the depth and the method. Fish were high up in the water and by fishing with two flies on clear intermidiate lines and a jerky stop start retreive we started to put a good catch together.
The succsesful fly of the day was a black sparkle blob with a weighted blob on the point. A lot of the fish took the fly on the hang before lifting out so dont be in a rush to recast.
We ended the day with 23 fish between us and as usual for Farmoor the fish fought like demons
Why fish anywhere else
Get on down and fill ya boots

Fishing Report: Sunday 28th September

This weeks settled and warm weather has certainly made for a busy week at Farmoor. Plenty of you regulars out and about, also encouraging to see new anglers too.

Farmoor II
Algae growth is still causing a few problems on the far bank, but the rest of the perimeter is clear. Boat fishing has been superb, good quality fish, plenty over 4lb and most anglers taking their bag limit.
Bank a little slower, but still good fishing. Plenty of bag limits being reached too. Fish all taking on a variety of patterns, buzzers, Diawl Bachs, crunchers, daddies etc
Rod average 3.5

Farmoor I
Great sport as always, fished well all week. Some algae left in one corner only, water a little cloudy, but good overall.
Fishing taking on Diawl Bachs and buzzers, then good dry fly action on the evening rise.
Rod average 4

Hoping to fish Farmoor I or II on Tuesday if the Weather permitting - not sure what the cold snap will do for it at the moment though ?? May well push the fish deeper....

What flies are doing the business at the moment?

I will post a report on here mid week with how I get on.

Hi Puzzler,
spoke to the Rangers yesterday, said FII was fishing really well, 4 fish and an 11lb bag weight yesterday for 1 angler within 2 hours.

Gather same old patterns working, but also now taking Minkie and other fry immitations. Always the best source of knowledge is the Ranger on the day you fish.

let us know how you get on, hope to fish myself tomorrow. tight lines.

Fished FI today. Given the clear blue skies the fishing was not too bad at all. Fished a floater with a team and took two early on with the UV cruncher on the top dropper. Both took quite close in. Both fish gave the usual 'Farmoor Bonefish fight'

Went a bit slow for a while so moved over to the causeway - took another an lost one - again on the UV cruncher.

Then it really slowed so switched positions again and stuck a mini gold humungus on a shooting head. They liked this one....
Took one on the second cast and then I hit the big one..... It just stripped out my line and backing and just kept going deep...
never saw it.....broke me at the dropper....:-( A BIG brown I suspect.....

Took a couple more before I had to pack up - so took 6 - lost two....and a monster :-(

Great day....

Fishing Report: Wednesday 8th October

General News:
Another very busy day today, we’re attracting lots of new anglers to the fishery from all over the country as news spreads of the quality of fishing here.

The new stocking policy introduced early this year seems to be paying dividends and we’re continually being told how surprised you are at the quality of the fish. 4-5lb, good quality, hard fighting, full tail, fin perfect fish are an everyday occurrence on Farmoor II.

Hope you’ve seen the recent reviews in Total FlyFisher, with other reviews due out in the coming weeks in Trout & Salmon and Trout Fisherman.

Farmoor II
Water: quality good/clear
Patterns: at this time of year many patterns are proving successful.
Bank – you’ll still find buzzer hatches coming off the water, so straight line small black buzzer set-up still working. Also small black booby at all depths and as there are plenty of fry about, try out minkies, pearly pheasant tail nymphs and small lures.
Boat – again plenty of patterns working, buzzers just below the surface, small emergers and some fantastic dry fly sport too. Many of the boats on sporting tickets (catch & release) have had up to 30 fish!

Rod Av: 3.5+

Farmoor I
We still can’t understand why more of you aren’t fishing this water? £17.50 for a day of fantastic fishing is good value for money, don’t you agree? It’s had some outstanding reviews in the press on the fly-fishing forums. Average size is 3lb-10lb, fantastic quality grown on fish, hard fighting fish and we’re confident there are some real monsters lurking in the depths (some of the browns are over 25 years old).

Water: quality good/clear
Patterns: again variety of patterns are working, still taking small buzzers, nymphs and small lures. In the bright conditions like today, try an intermediate or slow sink line (Di3)

Rod Av: 5+

Completely agree with the Rangers comments about Farmoor I here.....this is the 4th time I have fished it and each time it is almost empty......! The only other folk appart from myself today were doing a feature for T&S.
The quality of the fish are mind blowing - goodness knows what broke me today....I never got to see it but it ran like you would not beleive. Perhaps people prefer catch and keep because they think that taking a bag of fish home means that they feel they have more value for money. I sometimes will take a bag home to eat but lets be honest, you can only get so many in a frezzer!!

I would activley encourage more people to give this water a go.....

One question for the rangers - do you still give out matts for Farmoor I? I nearly went in a few times on the casuseway section (even with a long handled soft mesh net.

In the words of the Austrian/American musclebound politician....'I'll be back'

Hi All, just to give you an update!!
The RAF fished a Bank Match on Farmoor 2 on Monday 06 Oct from 10.00 till 18.00. Wind was S/SW slight and the Air Temp was about 15 C.
14 Anglers had 53 fish for a total weight of 111lb and 11oz.
Rod Ave 3.78, weight ave 2lb and 1 oz.
The winning team (of two) had 15 fish for 32lbs and the winning individual bag was 8 fish for 16 and half pounds biggest fish was 3lb dead!!
Boobies, minkies and some dries accounted, and the fisah were willing to take at varying depths, varying from hard on the bottom, slow retrieve, to right in the surface. Succesful colours mainly black/dark.
A great days fishing, and as always top quality fish and very helpful staff!!
Brill!

Cheers All
Bob

Farmoor 1 is fishing its nuts off !

I too cant understand why more people are not fishing No 1.Me and my mate had a lazy day today arriving about 1130 and intending to be home for tea.We were going to fish No 2 for a change but a glance at the returns and we opted for No 1...our favourite.

We had 6 cracking fish each all between 3-4lb with the best 3 all going 5lb plus.Biggest I guess was about 6lb which Big Phil had and I doubt he'd have had a better fight from a bonefish.I had a fantastic overwintered fish of about 4.5lb with a tail like a coal shovel that hit me like an express train and fought like a tarpon.Absolutely superb. Most to a bloodworm fished right down the edge. There were 3 other anglers on No 1.We spoke to two who'd also had some cracking fish to 7lb yet there were loads of anglers on no 2 and all looking very glum. That's not to say they weren't or didn't catch but the return book suggested otherwise and we didn't see much evidence to the contrary. We lost 3-4 fish too including a beast of a thing.

We just dont understand why more people aren't fishing No 1 ? We've had some fantastic days on there this year and its not usually that difficult once you find them and the fish are as good as any we've ever caught, anywhere.

Personally I do not want to take a bag of stinking whelks home so C&R suits me fine...and I'd be heartbroken to have had to knock any of the fish we caught today on the head.Magnificent things.

Get yourself on it while its fishing.Bloodworm on the point, buzzer or red Daiwl Bach on the droppers under a bung, drift it round right into the edge and hold on tight !
