Great day at F1 on the 12th - although cleaning rods, reels, lines and nets on a Sunday evening to get the layer of dried green algae off is a bit of a downer!
Eight awesome fish for the day with two knocking on the door of 6 lbs. Two Japanese gents watched the hooking and netting of one of these (with lots of obligatory flash photography), and then couldn't believe the release. Much muttering and sharp intakes of breath, probably something about mad flyfishermen not really appreciating fresh sushi.
All the fish taken really close in to the edge on small buzzers and DBs. Thought they'd been drawn in by the visible shoals of fry cruising along the side, but a minkie fly drew no response.
(P.S. Are the tennis ball-sized green balls littering the edges of F1 somebody's response to the size of the residents - giant bungs for giant fish?)

Farmoor 1 Monday 13th

Still fishing.Had to have another go after great sport at the weekend but only managed a short session.5 fish including another fantastic over wintered beauty of 4lb + with a best fish of well over 6lb.Fishing was sufficiently challenging in an awkward wind to keep me honest & thinking but the fish are there to be caught and what fish they are.

Bloodworm did the business for me again with a Coves PTN taking the best fish.Still dont understand why more people aren't fishing it.I had the whole place to meself.

Farmoor 1 Sunday 12th

I have been reading the forum and was looking forward to get to go fish Farmoor 1.The weather though was maybe not the best, being foggy in the morning and to have the sun blazing down in the afternoon, but had to go give it a go.I am not very knowledgeable to fish on this type of water and by no means a long fly caster but by the end of the day I had a great days fishing with getting 10 to net.Biggest fish maybe about 4lb+.I would recommend this water to anyone and I can`t wait to go and fish it again.

Caught most of my fish on a gold head hares ear and also on a Diawl Bach.

Also thanks to the ranger who found my rod which I managed to leave in the car park (muppet), and stayed on for me to collect it when I realised it was not in the car.

Farmoor 1 Friday 17th

Had another excellent day on Farmoor 1 yesterday - 10 rainbows, with the best around 6 pounds, and another two around the 5 pound park. I fished with two setups, both on 20 ft leaders - one with a team of weighted PT nymphs, and the other a team of buzzers. The score on the day was 3 to the PT nymphs and 7 to the buzzers, and all being taken on either the middle dropper or the point fly. Probably half of all takes were very close in - you certainly don't need to be a long distance caster to be amongst the fish here!

As others have said, the fish in this reservoir fight like crazy. I've got about 30 yards of braided nylon attached to the fly line, and then 30 pound nylon is attached to that to fill up the spool. Twice fishing on here I've been taken half way down the 30 pound nylon backing by big fish - and there is absolutely no way that I could have stopped them!

I've fished this water 8 times year, and my "worst" result (by far!) was 5 fish, which gives some indication of how good this place is! My best fish so far is about 8 pounds, and you can usually reckon on picking up something in the 4 to 5 pound range. And on top of that, you are talking top quality fish!

You might have guessed by now - I really rate this place!

Farmoor 1 Saturday 18th

Once again a terrific day. With things to do in the morning me and Big Phil didn't arrive until gone one o'clock and left about 6 having had 7 fish apiece.I had one around two pounds but that apart I doubt we had a fish under 3lb and we both had fish around the 6lb mark.I was again fortunate to get a magnificent overwintered fish of around 41/2 lb that thought it was a tarpon and looked like a grilse. At one point we both had fish on about 40 yards out.Fantastic sport.

I wouldn't call it easy fishing. You have to think about it and keep trying different things.I was getting spanked until I worked out what it was that Phil was doing differently and from then on we were away.

Last week we had nearly all our fish on bloodworm on the point. This week the bloodworm didn't work and most fish came to daiwl bachs/crunchers on the top or middle dropper.

The quality of the fish remains absolutely stunning. If a good proportion overwinter then this place is going to be unbelievable next year.

Footnote to above

I meant 60 yards not 40 and I agree with Pete. Most of our fish were caught at close range and when [as you almost always do] hook a lump there is no stopping that first run.

I cant think of anywhere where I've had more consistent sport or caught better quality fish.

Friday 7 November:

The reservoir has been fairly quiet over the last week, not many of you out braving the weather!

Farmoor 2
Fishing well from bank and the few boats out. Some really good fish being caught, one angler had a 7lb 2oz and a 6lb Rainbow a couple of days ago and another had a 7lb Rainbow yesterday.

Patterns: still varies but lots of people now on sinking line. Fry, PTNs, Minkies and Boobies all catching.

Rod Average: 3

Farmoor 1

Again not many people on it over the last week, but still a great water to fish.

Patterns working at the moment are nymphs and small lures.

Rod Average: 6

Hopefully going to get a morning at FII on Thursday. Would like to fish FI again as it was the best fishing I have had for a long time the last time I went, but my freezer is running low on trout (non in there actually) so FII it is. That's probably screwed my chances..... :-)

How far out are they on FII as I was looking to fish off the bank?

Hi All, My Brother and I fished Farmoor 2 on Friday 14 Dec we took a boat and would have been happy to have had acouple of fish apiece.
The weather was overcast, breeze from W/SW at 12/14kph and about 10 Deg C.
First drift, on Minkie Booby and a blob attractor coupled to a DI5 fished slow and at varying depths right across and around Stockie Corner produced 1 pull and little else.
Then a change of drift to 3 mark straight across to 7 mark, fished hard on the bottom, very slow retrieve with 12 fott leader and two small Orange boobies saw us boat 7 fish to 3 1/2 lb!! they were a little sluggish, but to be expected at this time of year.
The wind increased considerably and so we struggled to maintain the really slow presentation, so the fish dried up!!
We moved up to the relative shelter around the 4 mark and drifted down to about 100 yds beyond the cages, where we had a steady string of fish all to Orange Booby and DI5 fished VERY slow and deep.
By 1600 we had our bag limits, total weight of 17.09 and 16.12, biggest fish a 3lb 9 oz Steelhead. Not bad for a winters Day!!.
As always Royston and his team were spot on with their advice and areas to fish, and they continue to run an excellant fishery.
We shall be back next week!!
Cheers all.

Cheers All
Bob

After reading reports on Farmoor1 I had to have a go.
Travelling up from South Wales on the 12 November,I fished Farmoor1 that day.
I managed to get 5 Rainbows all around the 4-5lb mark, they were in fantastic condition and what a fight.
They all came to either a Red Diawl Bach or Apps Bloodworm fished on a floating line.
Can't wait for another go!

Great to catch up with many of you this weekend.

Sorry don't have a detailed report for you, but yesterday was great winter sport on F2. Water is still very clear and everyone seemed to be catching. Many good sized fish, 4-5lb for many anglers - heard that last weekend saw a couple of 7lb and 8lb fish.

Rod average yesterday was 4 on F2. Floating lines and pearly PTs working well still, but almost anything goes at the moment, floating/sinking lines and nymphs to fry patterns.

Today's changeable weather made the fishing more difficult. This morning saw some good catches, but things quietened down mid-afternoon. Biggest fish I saw was caught by a mate of mine, 6lb.

F1

Didn't see anyone on F1 today, but gather this is still fishing well too.

There is a very strong rumour going around that our very own Admin lady Jane Williams will be fishing at Farmoor 2 early on Saturday morning, what ever the weather!!! This will be a rarer sight, than an eyewitness report of Santa's sleigh streaking across the sky. So bring along your cameras, and autograph books, just in case you are lucky enough to see this very rare visitor to our reservoir. Ha Ha, sorry Jane, just had to do it. Smiffy.

Hello from Farmoor

I am pleased to report that although the water level is low F2 continues to fish well with a 4.3 rod ave on Saturday. Please, please call and submit your name for the Christmas Match on 20th December it will help Gill so much with the catering. use the mobile 07747640707 we still don't have the land line up and running, but it's coming soon.
I went to see Pete Jeffery in hospital this afternoon and it was good to see he is making progress, he has managed to walk up and down stairs and has been outside. His speech is still giving him dificulties but hes working hard on it. There will be a get well card at the lodge from Tuesday 9th for a week so please call in and put a message in it.

Regards
Royston
